Quantifying Employee Performance Management
I was reading Forrester's Zach Thomas's blog about Quantifying Employee Performance when it hit me that in our BPM industry, we talk all the time about making business processes more efficient, but don't put much emphasis on quantifying employee performance.
We try to steer away from quantifying employee performance to avoid any legal or moral "big brother" issues. Privacy policies are taken very seriously in most organizations. When implementing BPM solutions, we like to stress that it improves employee's performance (by automating their manual tasks) - not quantifying their performance.
But Zach makes a great point here "...valuable to clients who are looking to better manage performance, identify top and bottom performers, implement pay-for-performance, etc. — especially in this economy."
Quantifying employee performance, if done correctly, can tippy-toe around privacy issues and can bring positive inputs both to the employee and to the company.
Which employee doesn't want to show everyone that they are the fastest/most efficient/highly graded employee in their department ?
Quantifying work time and efficiency-based cost savings is easy, as this data is saved in the database during the process and can be calculated, but how do you quantify human-benefits:
- Increased retention
- Increased employee engagement
- Increased productivity due to competency alignment with job requirements
- Reduced time to productivity in new roles/projects
- Visibility into your bench strengths
- Visibility into goal attainment
- Competencies aligned with job requirements
I agree with Zach. I have not found these benefits to be quantifiable using the BPM platforms and BI tools available today.
